Nasser Kandil wrote: Washington at the crossroads

  • Washington cannot explain its position by beholding Syria the easy accusations as its Secretary of State John Kerry does.
  • Washington is doing its best to regain the armistice, and to return the spirit to Geneva talks, but it fails, thus the result is a limited calm for hours, it is extended once or twice, but Geneva remains at a standstill.
  • Washington faces on one hand understandings that it signed two months ago, they stated that the political limit of the negotiation internationally is to leave the issue of presidency to the Syrians, but if the understanding was suspended, then the matter is resorted to the ballot boxes, where the limit of the armistice is ceasing-fire among the participants in Geneva and excluding ISIS and Al Nusra.
  • In contrast, Washington faces an insistence from its two allies the Turkish and the Saudi accompanied with some of the Syrians on a security ceiling of the armistice by including Al Nusra front to its provisions since it is the power which without it they lose the real influence in the Syrian geography, and a similar insistence to stay under the limit of the negotiated mark-time by sticking to link the progress with the impossible resolution of the Syrian presidency.
  • Washington cannot stay for a long time without a position.
  • Washington either to choose the sacrifice of the understandings in favor of the return to the full war, or it obligates the allies with its understandings, or it goes on in the understandings without them.
