Nasser Kandil wrote: Robert Ford’s advices

  • Once again the former US Ambassador to Syria Robert Ford made statements that highlight the American reality and its available options in Syria.
  • Ford’s speech comes at a time where there is a lot of talk about options of coming war and an escalation entitled “Kurdish entity” protected by the US troops.
  • Ford said “The government of the Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad has enhanced its authority in the west and east of the country, and although the US and the Russian military processes are separate, but the situation will change by the achievement of Al-Assad of gains in the east of the country under Russian-Iranian support” he indicated that “the militants factions supported by Washington are approaching from the sites of the Syrian army in the region”, so America has to take a decision regarding how and when will they withdraw”.
  • “America does not have new options in Syria, and some of the available options are worse than the others, moreover, the hope to get Al-Assad out of power and to achieve a peaceful transition of authority is fading if not unattainable and false. The option of supporting the Syrian opposition forces must be out of the equation, because the Syrian army is insisting on recapturing the entire country and maybe it will succeed in that”.
  • “All of that means that Washington must abandon the hope of supporting the separate Kurdish region, and to leave the option of presenting reconstruction assistance to the regime, just to be satisfied with providing the humanitarian assistance to the refuges and to ease their burden on the hosting countries, furthermore to try to confine the ability to mobilize the  refugees in their communities”,
  • For those who want to read, these are the characteristics of the next US policy in Syria, to prevent the return of the refugees, to play with this card, and to leave the Kurds and the armed groups to face their fate.
