On the remembrance of the martyrdom of the Prime Minister Rashid Karami, it is important to
remind of the features and the patriotism of this leading figure that embodied the characteristics
of the statesman honestly. His patriotism away from rhetoric, personal interests, sectarian and
regional considerations, and electoral policies was his distinctive characteristic, he ruled
according to the public interest whether in approaching the foreign political issues or the internal
ones.
His involvement and exit from the government were always according to the public interest only;
it was easy for him to refuse the premiership if he felt that he would not be able serve his country
within surrounding circumstances and conditions, and he got out of it reassured if it became a
burden on the national interest. With the same determination, he accepted it if he had in his mind
and spirit a perception of what can he do to serve the public interest, while according to many
politicians ruling is an issue that worth sacrifices, deals, and concessions and always governed by
private interest and the abandonment of it is either a compulsory loss or is governed by foreign
demands.
According to him, Lebanon’s unity is sacred and its Arabism is not subject to compromise. Its
hostility to Israel, the sticking to its sovereignty, its relationship with Syria, and its responsibility
towards Palestine are stable constants. At the same time, dialogue is an inevitable way to resolve
disputes; respecting differences and the polite discourse are conditions of the public work. He is
honest and impartial in practicing his responsibility from the cost of a cup of coffee and stationary
to the expenses of travel, escorts, and advisers. For him everything is well calculated.
